The town of Sambalpur is very well connected and can be easily reached as it houses a railway station, and an airport located quite near the region. There are buses that you can take to Sambalpur too.

There are four railway stations in Sambalpur, namely Sambalpur (Khetrajpur), Sambalpur Road (Fatak), Hirakud and Sambalpur City. Sambalpur City station is located on the Bhubaneswar-Jharsuguda rail line, while rest three stations are located on the Jharsuguda-Bargarh rail line. There are direct train connections to all the metros and prominent cities across India. It lacks direct connectivity to Indore, Dehradun, Lucknow and Guwahati.Trains can be taken to the town from many nearby regions like Ahmedabad (Puri Gimb Exp), Rourkela (Sbp Bsb Express), Howrah (Ispat Express) and Puri (Sbp Puri Int Ex). These trains will charge minimal fares and will be very comfortable too. Train tickets need to be booked in advance in case you’re planning to take this mode of transport, as locals here opt for this mode quite often, mainly during the holiday season. Regular trains will be available to Howrah and Puri, and these can be taken on a daily basis. Train fares from Rourkela to Sambalpur will range around Rs 120 for the basic class of travel (sleeper). Air conditioned coaches will charge fares of Rs 347 for AC Tier Two seats and Rs 257 for AC Tier Three seats. Second Sitting class tickets will cost Rs 68.

Flights can also be taken to reach here. The nearest Airports are Swami Vivekananda Airport, Raipur (262 km) and Biju Patnaik Airport, Bhubaneswar (325 km). A new airport is being constructed at Jharsuguda (50 km). Flights to Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi will be regularly available and these will charge fares of around Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000.

Sambalpur has a well networked transport facility for commercial and public transportation. Local as well as state operate buses are also available for Sambalpur from the nearby located towns and cities. Fare is Rs 2- 4 per km. Buses depart from the Bus Terminal to Jharsuguda at every 10 minutes and to Bargarh at every 15 minutes. The Bus Terminal is located at Ainthapali. Rourkela-Sambalpur State Highway-10 is presently being upgraded from a two lane highway to four lane and even six lanes where it is necessary. An estimated amount of Rs. 1270 crores is to be spent on this upgradation and it is planned in such a way that by 2017 it will have the capacity to handle 49,000 vehicles everyday.
